Anton Corbijn

Dutch, 1955–present

Over the last four decades, Corbijn has worked as a photographer with a long list of creative people, mostly musicians, actors, models, painters and designers. Corbijn’s first love was music which initially brought him to photography and still continues as a red thread in his career with his work for U2, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Coldplay and Arcade Fire to name but a few. He has published over 20 monographs, photographed numerous record sleeves, directed about 80 music videos, designed stages and had his work shown in many museums. His current focus is very much as a film director with movies such as Control (2007), The American (2010) and A Most Wanted Man (2014).

The characteristic intimacy with his subjects only found in Corbijn’s work is often treated in natural light with its generous nuances, stillness and softness, which brings out a graphic and sculptural dimension.

Imperfection is always there for him and is what makes his photographs so human despite the often iconic status of his subjects.
