Cathleen Naundorf

German, 1968–present

Naundorf is an Art director and photographer who studied painting and photography. Naundorf has traveled extensively since the early 90’s for renowned international publishing houses. Specialising in photo reportage and fascinated by ethnic groups, she worked with native tribes like the Yanomami in the Amazon, with the Mongols and Kazakhstani in the Altai Mountains, and several editions with the Shamans in Yakutia, Siberia.

Inspired by her encounter and longstanding friendship with Horst P. Horst, Naundorf became interested in fashion photography. In 1997 she started photographing backstage at the Paris fashion shows for Condé Nast.

Since 2000 Naundorf has been working with analog large format cameras using mostly negative films or Polaroids. Between 2005 to 2011 she worked on a series titled; Un rêve de mode, which focused on the couture houses; CHANEL, Dior, Gaultier, Valentino, Saab, Lacroix and Philip Treacy. Thanks to her outstanding photographs, she had the privileged access to these couturiers collections for her elaborate and cinematic productions. This large body of work was published in The Polaroids of Cathleen Naundorf (Prestel 2012).

Since 2011 Naundorf has been working privately with Mr. Valentino Garavani on several projects, including An Italian story and The NY City ballet.

In 2016 Naundorf received the American Photography Award. The 2018 publication of Women of Singular beauty – CHANEL Haute Couture by Cathleen Naundorf (Rizzoli), celebrated over 15 years of Naundorf’s collaboration with the legendary fashion house CHANEL.

Her work has been published in Harper’s Bazaar, National Geographic and Condé Nast. Her photographs have been internationally collected and exhibited around the world in galleries and museums. Naundorf’s artistic photographs are represented by the Hamiltons Gallery, London and Holden Luntz, Palm Beach. She lives and works in Paris and London.
