Katerina Belkina

Russian, 1974–present

Belkina’s portraits are picturesque amalgamations of painting, graphic design and photography, all elements rooted in her formal education at art school and photography, and previous experience working for a Russian television channel as a computer graphic designer.

Belkina presents new versions of renowned classic works of painters such as Picasso, Degas, Kahlo, Lempicka, among others, posing herself as the subject in her staged portraits, as seen in the series Paint (2006-2007), whilst the series Revival (2014-2017) explores further allegories on the theme of neo-renaissance, mastering digital manipulation with balance, distinctive colour scheme and composition.

Belkina has been awarded International Lucas-Cranach-Preis of the Cranach-Foundation in 2015, and Hasselblad Masters Award in 2016, and has held exhibitions at Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, Germany (2017) and Kunsthal Rotterdam.
