OPENING WEEK

Candice Breitz

Artist Talk

Some of my Best Friends are White –
A Conversation with Candice Breitz

Fotografiska is thrilled to announce a public conversation between artist Candice Breitz for its Opening Week. The conversation will focus on Breitz’s video installation, Whiteface, which the artist has described as“a portrait of whiteness in a state of panic.” Breitz’s deliberately theatrical performance in Whiteface draws attention to the constructed nature of whiteness and other racial categories. Via a scathing study of the language via which whiteness frames, normalises and leverages its power, Breitz unpacks the ongoing backlash against anti-racist movements as white people struggle to come to terms with public discourse that highlights phenomena such as ‘white privilege,’ ‘white fragility,’ ‘white rage’ and ‘white guilt.’

Join us for an engaging evening as Breitz—a critically-acclaimed artist who is known for her incisive commentary on social issues—offers insight into the making of and thinking behind this ground-breaking work.
