A conversation on the evening of the premier of Adrienne Raquel’s Onyx exhibition. Editor Nandi Howard will speak with Photographer Adrienne Raquel about her first exhibition commissioned by Fotografiska New York. The conversation will focus on Adrienne’s fantasy filled and glamorous photography, and black female identity. What does it mean to be a black female photographer and photographing other black females through her gaze? Why was Onyx important for this moment? How did this past year impact her work and the subjects she was shooting?
In this alluring and provocative photographic exploration of the famed Onyx strip club in Houston, Texas, Raquel transports the viewer to the palpable heat of the environment through captivating, club-inspired curation.
With her signature gloss and attention to detail, Raquel highlights the nuances of Southern strip culture, focusing on the relationships between the dancers to depict a captivating narrative of femininity, sisterhood, transformation and strength.

About Adrienne Raquel
Adrienne Raquel is a New York based photographer and art director. Inspired by femininity, soulfulness and color, Adrienne’s work is rooted in nostalgia and fantasy while remaining fresh and contemporary.
Her work has been included in Mickalene Thomas’ Better Nights exhibition at Miami’s Bass Museum and The New Black Vanguard, curated by Antwaun Sargent and presented by the Aperture foundation. Select clients include CR Fashion Book, Cultured Magazine, Elle, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview Magazine, Playboy, T Magazine, V Magazine and Vanity Fair. ONYX is her first solo exhibition.

Nandi Howard is a Fashion Editor from Houston, Texas residing in Brooklyn, NY. The down south native takes pride in finding Black fashion hot takes and enlarging that idea for mass media to discuss. Along with her position at ESSENCE, she has contributed to publications such as Playboy, BET, Fader, Houstonia Magazine, Hollywood Reporter, and Harper’s Bazaar.
