OPENING NIGHT: Adrienne Raquel, ONYX Preview & Discussion with Nandi Howard

Apr 22 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, 2021

A conversation on the evening of the premier of Adrienne Raquel’s Onyx exhibition. Editor Nandi Howard will speak with Photographer Adrienne Raquel about her first exhibition commissioned by Fotografiska New York.  The conversation will focus on Adrienne’s  fantasy filled and glamorous photography, and black female identity.  What does it mean to be a black female photographer and photographing other black females through her gaze?  Why was Onyx important for this moment? How did this past year impact her work and the subjects she was shooting?

In this alluring and provocative photographic exploration of the famed Onyx strip club in Houston, Texas, Raquel transports the viewer to the palpable heat of the environment through captivating, club-inspired curation.

With her signature gloss and attention to detail, Raquel highlights the nuances of Southern strip culture, focusing on the relationships between the dancers to depict a captivating narrative of femininity, sisterhood, transformation and strength.
