About the event
This May, we are delighted to launch a new Salon series exclusively for our Patron Members, with Enuma Okoro as our first guest host and moderator.
A Nigerian-American author, writer, speaker, and cultural curator, Okoro’s research and writing interests include the role of the visual arts, culture, intersectional feminism, and contemplative eco-spirituality in the study of the human condition, how we live and how we accumulate knowledge. She aims especially to elevate the creative, and intellectual work of women, artists of the African diaspora and people of color.
Okoro’s Chapel Salon is conceived to explore the role of photography and image making in shaping, challenging and reclaiming narratives of black womanhood in self-formation and in the public imagination. The narrative will have a through thread of photography, with our exhibitions and the wider cultural moment as context.
Okoro will be in conversation with Adama Delphine Fawundu, Catherine McKinley, and Delphine Diallo.
Adama Delphine Fawundu is a photographer and visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her distinct visual language centers themes of indigenization, and ancestral memory. Fawundu co-published the critically acclaimed book MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora. For decades, she has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
Catherine E. McKinley, a Fulbright Scholar and winner of numerous distinctions for her writing and curatorial work, is author of four critically acclaimed books, most recently The African Lookbook: A Visual History of 100 Years of African Women (Bloomsbury, 2021), which won the inaugural Eiger Foundation Prize for Best African Photobook.
Delphine Diallo is a Brooklyn-based French and Senegalese visual artist and photographer. Born into a French-Senegalese creative family, Delphine Diallo’s first expressions of artistry were in music, graphic design, and artistic direction. However, meeting North-American photographer Peter Beard (1938-2020) radically changed the course of her life enabling her to become a photographer in the full capacity of her agentivity and teaching her invaluable practical lessons.
The Chapel Salon will be an exclusive seasonal gathering held in the intimate surroundings of Chapel Bar, a beautiful speakeasy that sits beside Church Missions House, the historical six floor building on Park Avenue South that is home to Fotografiska in New York.
Tickets are available individually or paired with a dinner in Verōnika, featuring a beautifully curated feasting menu.
