Roseline With Raised Arms Poster
Cooper & Gorfer, an American-Austrian photography duo, are two artists from different backgrounds brought together by their shared love of storytelling and narrative structures. Sarah Cooper is a classically trained photographer while Nina Gorfer studied architecture under eminent British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. Together, through staged photographs taken in colorfully surrealist sets and based on research through their travels, the duo takes us across stories of people—largely young women—and places from around the world.
I Know Not These My Hands tells richly-imagined stories of great cultural and personal change at which Cooper & Gorfer’s protagonists sit at the cusp. It deals with the traces a troubled history leaves on the human mind: colonial wounds, forced migration, displacement, fading recollection, and searching identity. This series spans Samland in northern Scandinavia, to the Faroe Islands, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan and Argentina, and premiered in Fotografiska Stockholm in 2017. “Roseline With Raised Arms” hails, too, from Between These Folded Walls, Utopia, Cooper & Gorfer’s exhibition at Fotografiska New York in 2020-2021, travelling later to Stockholm and Tallinn.
