provide a platform

With the Emerging Artists initiative, Fotografiska wants to provide a platform for young, promising photographers based in Sweden who use unique imagery to show us their everyday lives. Starting in April 2023, the building’s exhibition hall will be devoted to Emerging Artists. The goal is to combine forces to create a local and inspiring art scene.

The initial artist is Malmö-based Ikram Abdulkadir, who has been recognized for her loving and intimate portraits of friends and family members. Her photographs have been published in such newspapers and magazines as The Guardian, Vice Arabia, and Paletten, and she has been profiled by the Swedish Television program Hemmakultur. The exhibit I See Home in You, which opens at Fotografiska on April 28, shows two photo series by Abdulkadir: We will meet again in Paradise (2020) and Do you remember the ocean, Abaayo? (2021).

depicted on our own terms

“In my art I explore such questions as the strong connection I have with my younger sisters, from familiarity, cultural, political and geographical to spiritual. Many of my photographs are declarations of love to them and a documentation of my life through the loved ones I have all around me. My home is my sisters, and I hope they feel the same for me,” says Ikram Abdulkadir.

“Ever since beginning to take photographs and to create, my sisters have been subjects for my works, and in recent years I have also begun to include other family members, friends and women who I identify with: Black, Muslim women living in Sweden. My photos are also a form of collective resistance, an expression of self-affirmation that allows us to be depicted on our own terms.”

Mohamed Mire is the exhibition producer for the Emerging Artists concept at Fotografiska and has spent many hours searching the country for talent. His goal is to highlight young photographers based in Sweden who use their camera to help us understand their daily lives.

“It feels important to highlight the eyes of the next generation, and we know that there are many artists who lack access to galleries and museums. That’s the platform we want to create here at Fotografiska. What we are looking for above all is promising photographers who can inspire both current and future generations,” says Mohamed Mire.

I See Home in You will be on exhibition at Fotografiska Stockholm until 23 July, 2023.
