At the same time I am interested in different aspects of identity and also in the interaction between, on the one hand, the sacred, and on the other hand, the profane—it delights me to disarm the former and to exalt the latter, which often leads to a combination of humour and melancholy.

Julian Birbrajer

Has had a number of solo shows, e.g. at Galleri KG52 in Stockholm, The Stockholm photography antiquarian bookshop, Rönnells in Stockholm and has also participated in groups shows, like the Autumn Salon at Fotografiska (2014, 2015 and 2016). Julian has received grants from the Swedish National Art Council and the Swedish Photographers’ Association and is a member of the German photo stock agency Mauritius Images.

At the university he studied linguistics. “My life long obsession has been to explore language and time by means of photography. The sources of inspiration are words and concepts, dictionaries, encyclopedias, flea markets and cemeteries. I enjoy questioning conventions and always try to look beyond the surface. René Magritte’s ”Ceci n’est pas une pipe” have always fascinated me, because of the questions that arise on linguistic and figurative representation.

At the same time I am interested in different aspects of identity and also in the interaction between, on the one hand, the sacred, and on the other hand, the profane—it delights me to disarm the former and to exalt the latter, which often leads to a combination of humour and melancholy. My domestic gods are Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger. The isms that inspire me mostly are conceptualism, dada and Fluxus.”
