Aristocracy: Private Pirates Poster
This poster rendition of David LaChapelle’s Aristocracy: Private Pirates (2014), from the exhibition make BELIEVE, depicts three planes circling in colourful spirals of pink. This image, with the rest of LaChapelle’s Aristocracy series, certainly appears a dream. The Turner-like cloudiness, the nebulous intermix of sunrise and sunset colours that impress like a colour field painting if not the idyllic — LaChapelle produced these scenes by submerging model private jets into a large water tank and using tempera paint and gelled lights to create the clouds and colours. But the tragedy of planes crashing isn’t lost in all of this suffusion: with the circling confusion of these planes, LaChapelle comments on the race to destinations that are unattainable, the busyness of accumulation, and the journey of acquisition to a claustrophobia and ignition with no end.
