“The Man, the Image & the World” was a retrospective exhibition of the career of Henri Cartier-Bresson. With more than 250 photographs from every phase of his career, the exhibition featured both very well known and extremely rare images.

Henri Cartier-Bresson used photography as a medium for storytelling and had an ability to capture important moments by being at the right place at the right time. Cartier-Bresson was in Spain during the civil war, in Germany when they opened their first concentration camp, in China when Mao rose to power and in Paris during the student protests in 1968. Claiming that his camera was his sketch pad, a tool of intuition and spontaneity, he coined the phrase “the defining moment” – the art of pressing the shutter at exactly the right moment. Cartier-Bresson meant that for an image to be impactful, one has to engage fully in what one is seeing in the viewfinder, which takes a great deal of concentration, discipline and an understanding of geometry. For example, Cartier-Bresson never cropped his photographs, he instead composed them in the viewfinder before actually taking the photograph.
