Before they pass away #3 Poster
From the exhibition Before They Pass Away comes this beautiful poster of another man in a red suit holding a shield and a spear.
Jimmy Nelson stages reality. Humble but at the same time magnificent, he shows the beauty and diversity that exists in the world. He has traveled thousands of miles to portray indigenous peoples on five continents. It is Jimmy Nelson's subjective image of what a part of the world looks like, a part that is disappearing, for various reasons.
The driving force for Jimmy Nelson is the search for beauty and the pursuit of belonging. He has had this with him since childhood when he got to go with his father, who was a geologist at an oil company, around the world. When he was fifteen years old, he was wrongly medicated for malaria and lost all his hair. This got him interested in how our appearance reflects how other people look at us and treat us.
After spending ten years at a private Jesuit school in the north of England, he went to Tibet where he walked around and took photographs. The pictures received international attention and his career as a photographer took off. He has carried with him the idea of photographing indigenous peoples for many years, but it was not until 2010 that this project was realized. For three years, he visited 35 different cultural populations, including Ethiopia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Siberia.
