This poster rendition of Nick Brandt’s “Ranger with Tusks of Killed Elephant,” from the series Across the Ravaged Land, shows a crouched ranger dearly holding onto elephant tusks that lie on the arid desert floor. He hides his face behind these severed tusks. He yearns — mourns for this member of his land and community unjustly taken from him by the greed of poachers. In this photograph, Brandt crystallises the relationship between animal and human: symbiotic, tender, necessary.
