Schmitz really has a special eye for this, often violent relationship between man and nature, which she manages to capture and dramatize in her photography. Never is an abandoned place's astonishing imagination-provoking decomposition process as fragilely beautiful as in her series Earthworks and the clinging of invasive plants as frightening and at the same time poetic Kudzu Project.

In Transitions the forces of nature are pitted against man's futile attempt to capture the moment and control time - the hopelessness of believing ourselves to be the masters of creation, and nature's merciless response to this destructive utopia.
